Facts and information about Celebrants and Ceremonies

Celebrants

The work of a celebrant is still very much unknown by many, but I am here to rectify that. Here are some FAQ's about Celebrants, what they do, how they do it and why everyone should have at least one ceremony in their lifetime, led by a trained and professional Celebrant.

What is a Celebrant?

Celebrants are individuals who should be trained and specialise in creating and delivering bespoke ceremonies for special life moments, such as Weddings, Life Celebrations/Funerals, Naming Ceremonies, Vow Renewals, Transitioning Ceremonies, Adoption Ceremonies, Animal Life Celebrations - basically any important moment in your life that you want to celebrate or commemorate by inviting others to join you, and a Celebrant will lead the ceremony that achieves this.

How Do I Choose a Celebrant?

The Celebrant you choose must be someone you connect with and who 'gets' you, no matter the ceremony they are required to perform. There must be an alignment of values and creativity, as they must be someone who understands what you want and listens to all you have to say, then creates and delivers it to your approval.

Who Can be a Celebrant?

Anyone can lead a ceremony, but only a trained and, preferably qualified individual, can be the best sort of Celebrant, thereby being someone who will create a professional ceremony and incorporate bespoke rituals and personalised moments within it. I was trained by the International College of Professional Celebrants and also have the NOCN Level 3 Diploma in Celebrancy Qualification.

How Does a Celebrant Work?

No matter which ceremony type a Celebrant creates, they will meet with the individual, couple or family concerned so that they can discover as much about them in order to create a carefully written ceremony that will be personal, warm and characterful to them and their event - be it a Wedding or Celebration of Life. They will then provide a draft version to be proofread and will make any amendments requested until a version that everyone is happy with, is finally decided upon. On the day of the ceremony, after liaising with all third parties involved, will deliver the script, rituals and lead the gathering to the very best of their ability.

Can a Celebrant Legally Marry Me and My Partner?

Currently, only church officials or licensed registrars can legally marry you, but that is only the legal part of the whole. A Celebrant can perform the commemorative ceremony at which you invite your family and friends and which you make special and incorporate all that makes it personal to you both. (See Weddings & Vow Renewals page for more details).

How Does a Celebrant know what to Say?

The Celebrant will always take their cue from the details you offer them in your planning meetings. You can have input on their drafted scripts or eulogy's and they can even help you write your wedding vows, but the most important quality in anything they say, is that they are always approved by you.

What is the Difference Between a Humanist Celebrant and a Civil Celebrant?

The difference is based around religious content. A Humanist Celebrant will be best suited to those who do not wish for any religious content or connotations within their ceremony at all; a Civil Celebrant can incorporate a little or a lot of religious content, the choice is yours.

Bookings Ceremonies and Costs

How Do I Make a Booking?

Most Celebrants will check they are available on your chosen date, after which you can make a firm booking by paying a booking fee. I require a booking fee which equals 50% of the total fee for your chosen ceremony. See Terms & Conditions for full details.

How Much Does a Celebrant Booking Cost?

It depends on which type of ceremony you book as to how much it costs.

Wedding/Vow Renewal Ceremonies will require far more time to organise and so will cost more, but then it also depends on the requirements you have, so that may mean more or less cost too. Read the Ceremony Prices page for cost ranges and also ask to discuss your needs too, as a conversation can always be had to work around budgets and requirements.

What if I Change My Mind?

All ceremony booking fees are fully refundable as long as you notify me within 14 days of paying. After this timeframe, they are non-refundable. There may also be further payments required if a cancellation notice is given within three months of a Wedding. For other ceremony types, please call to discuss or see Terms & Conditions for further clarification.

Is There Any Discount for Multiple Ceremony Bookings?

This is something I often get asked, as Naming Ceremonies often follow on from Weddings, funnily enough!  I would be honoured to perform more than one ceremony for anyone and a 10% discount would be given with thanks for the return booking.

What Can be Included in a Ceremony?

Whether you require a Wedding or Life Celebration Ceremony, there are numerous rituals or creative additions that can add meaning and inclusion for those involved.

Read the Rituals area within the Ceremonies Page of choice in the upper Menu for more details.

Where can a Funeral/Memorial
service be held?

A Funeral or Memorial service can be held anywhere you wish - a favourite spot, hotel, pub, home or garden. As long as you discuss your requirements with your Funeral Directors, so they can bring the coffin to your chosen venue for the service, and you agree that the cremation/burial will happen later/afterwards, then you are fine to arrange the actual service wherever you like. You must of course make a venue, such as a hotel, aware there will be a coffin on site in case they have an issue with this or need to make internal arrangements, but usually most are happy to accommodate, as this is becoming more and more favoured as society moves away from the church.
