Naming Ceremonies

Naming ceremonies traditionally serve as a meaningful alternative to religious christenings, but the possibilities extend far beyond that.

Adoption ceremonies and Gender Affirmation ceremonies are beautiful and joyous celebrations of identity and new beginnings, and they are perfect for a celebrant-led service. These milestones—whether welcoming a child into a family or affirming one's true self—deserve to be celebrated in a way that reflects their unique significance. Surrounded by family and friends, these moments create lasting memories that will be cherished for years to come. If you're looking to mark one of life's most joyful occasions with a ceremony that is as special and unique as the moment itself, I would love to help bring your vision to life.

 Naming Ceremony's
Butterflys symbolise transformation, hope and rebirth

The naming of a new life is a moment filled with hopes, dreams, and the promise of a bright future—one filled with health, success, and endless opportunities. Celebrating new life is a universal joy, and there is no better way to mark this special occasion than with a personalized ceremony created just for you and your child. This ceremony can hold all the love, well-wishes, and promises you wish to bestow upon them for their happiness and future.

Incorporating meaningful rituals can further enrich the experience, connecting the family and loved ones who will play a role in supporting and guiding your child as they grow*. These heartfelt moments can serve as a lasting foundation, creating bonds and cherished memories that will endure. Naming ceremonies can take place once the birth has been registered or later if desired, offering a beautiful way to celebrate and welcome your child into the world with those who matter most.

Let me help you create a ceremony that is as unique and special as the life you are celebrating, filled with love, hope, and promise for the future.

*Within a Naming Ceremony, it is usual for the parents to select friends or family members whom they would like to fill the role of 'Guide Parents'; other names known to have been used are:

Sparents (spare parents), Honorary Aunt/Uncle, Odd-Parents and even Fairy Godmothers/fathers.

Sometimes 'Mentors' or 'Guardians' are used, but they carry their own fundamental meanings, so think carefully before you decide on what to call yours.

What is a ‘Guide Parent’?

During the ceremony, the part of your 'Guide Parents' is usually to promise to provide spiritual (if required), moral and practical guidance to the child as they grow up. Individuals trusted by the parents to be a part of their child's life as someone to turn to, should the need arise and to offer support and love in the long term.

The 'Guide Parents' form an integral part of the ceremony, perhaps offering their promises to your child, reading a poem or tribute to mark their intentions and vowing to be a lifelong extension of the family, as they grow up. Remember, if you wish for your 'Guide-parents' to have a legally binding responsibility to your child in the event of your death, this would have to be dealt with by a lawyer and is separate from this role.

I would be most happy to coach you through the process of designing your child's naming ceremony, as they are joyous and can be great fun, filled with love and good wishes; also, religious elements can be included as you wish. I am not a Humanist celebrant.

The moment a child is embraced into their forever home is an indescribable joy, one that resonates deeply with everyone involved. The excitement and love are infectious, spreading to everyone who shares in the celebration. This occasion is nothing short of extraordinary, deserving of a ceremony full of hope, positivity, and heartfelt joy. It marks the beginning of a lifetime of togetherness, and with so many meaningful rituals to choose from, I would be honored to design a ceremony that unites everyone and creates bonds that will last forever. Adoption ceremonies can take place once the adoption court order has been granted.
