"To everything there is a season..."

As a celebrant, I have the privilege of standing alongside people during some of life's most significant moments.

The excitement of a wedding day.

The joyful welcome of a new child.

The quiet reflection of a memorial.

The courage of a new beginning.

The bittersweet sadness of saying goodbye.

Although every ceremony is unique, there is one thing they all have in common: they mark a change.

And when we pause to look around us, we discover that nature has been teaching us about change since the beginning of time.

Nature Knows the Way

The ancient Wheel of the Year follows the ever-turning cycle of the seasons. It reminds us that life is never static. Everything grows, blossoms, bears fruit, fades, rests, and begins again.

Whether or not you follow the Wheel of the Year spiritually, its wisdom is wonderfully universal.

Each season offers us an invitation - to notice, to reflect, to celebrate, to let go.

As celebrants, we naturally work within these rhythms because ceremonies themselves honour life's changing seasons.

The Eight Turning Points

Throughout the year, many people recognise eight seasonal festivals that sit between the solstices and equinoxes.

Each carries its own symbolism and inspiration.

❄ Yule – Winter Solstice

Around 21st December

This is dedicated to the longest night; it heralds the promise of returning light and celebrates a time of hope, remembrance and gathering together.

🌱 Imbolc

🌸 Ostara – Spring Equinox

Around 20th March

🌾 Lughnasadh (Lammas)

31st October

Perhaps the most reflective point of the Wheel.

Why This Matters in Celebrant Work

One of the reasons I love creating ceremonies inspired by nature is because nature reminds us that change is not something to fear.

Every tree lets go of its leaves.

Every flower returns to seed.

Every sunrise follows darkness.

Every spring follows winter.

Life moves in circles rather than straight lines.

The Wheel of the Year offers beautiful inspiration for ceremonies because it reflects something we all experience, regardless of our beliefs - the changing seasons of our own lives.

Whether we're welcoming a new baby, celebrating a marriage, blessing a new home, remembering a loved one, or simply marking a new chapter, nature gently reminds us that every ending carries the possibility of another beginning.

Bringing the Seasons into Your Ceremony

You don't need to follow any particular faith or tradition to weave seasonal beauty into your ceremony.

As has been done before us, since time immemorial, together we might include:
